A Clinical Study of the Liver Abscess

Abstract
Author studied clinical observation of the liver abscess in 38 cases at the Department of General Surgery of Pusan National University Hospital during the yeras Dec. 1961-May 1968.
1) The liver abscess was 1.5% among total admitted 2,392 cases.
2) 26.3%(10 cases) was amoebic liver abscess, 57.8%(22 cases) was pyogenic and 15.9%(6 cases) was undetermined of 38 cases. The ratio of amoebic to pyogenic was 1:2.2. The sex incidecne was decades in amoebic and pyogenici liver absoss.
3) 81.5% was attacked to the right lobe but only 7.8% was to the left lobe and both lobe have been attacked in cases of 10.7%. The ratio was 10 right to 1 left lobe.
4) The duration of illness in amoebic liver abscess was longer than pyogenic.
5) In all of cases, subjective symptoms were revealed pain on the right upper quadrant, fever and palapted liver.
6) In majority of cases(76.3%), liver function were mildly disturbed and elevated the values of serum alkaline phosphotase in 84.2%.
7) E. histolytica was detected in amoebic liver abscess(30%) and positive culture of staphylococcui, E. coli and streptococci were detected in pyogenic liver abscess.
8) In amoebic abscess, 40% of cases have been experienced history of amoebic colitis of hepatitis. In pyogenic, 59% of cases have a history of pyogenic infection previoulsy.
9) Complications were revealed in 34.2% of cases and mortality rate was 10.5% ; in amoebic 10.0% and pyogenic 9.0%.
